Just a Moment...
The big push this next week... the harvest gold kitchen we gutted last spring will become the kitchen of the future...OK I'll settle for kitchen of 2006...A gross of T-shirts and a meeting with the accountants...All work and no play for moi for a few days, I'll stop by the old familiar places if I have time, but I won't be posting anything new for a few days...that's OK, jm posts enough for 3 people, I'm sure she will entertain us...:)

Best Wishes on your kitchen remodel!! we redid ours about 2 yrs ago in March . . . (w/my 4th house Pisces, remodels happen in March . .) I'm still stuck w/the harvest gold range but did get to replace the frig. We got a bottom freezer Amana & just love it. Have the food stuffs we use at eye level . . . novel idea! A friend of mine painted her kitchen/dining area a lovely very pale shade of blue/lavender. It looks & felt so wonderful I decided to go w/a very pale blue but more to the grey. It's proven to be a great choice. So calming & restful. We also put in bigger overhead light panels w/daylight spectrum light. . . another good decision. :-) My S/O completely rebuilt the counter tops, drawer fronts & a whole new counter unit w/cabinets he refinished. All the wood trim is golden browns & compliments the cool blues nicely. A welcoming kitchen/dining area is so important to the feel of the house. Now we have the downstairs bathroom remodel from the studs out . . . are we nuts or what?!
:-)
Harvest Gold! Avocado Green! Felt wallpaper! Faux brick wallboard! Gack... this brings back memories of the house my parents moved us into when I was 15. I was so mortified by the dated decor that I lost what social life I had.
I'd love a new kitchen now, though... not having enough space to work is killer.

Totally agree - that's why we made all the countertops deeper/or wider. Also put in a 10' deep sink which is helpful for washing fruits & vegies.

LOL.
I redid my kitchen a couple of years ago (has it really been that long!). Painted the cabinets white, put in a new black counter, white applicances, painted the walls a light khaki color. New rug in the living room, very soft and supposedly a khaki too. Mostly just a light beige. I love my space. Everything is based off a painting by Remedios Varo (a Spanish/Mexican surrealist who paints intriguing psychological vignettes with exotic animalistic people. A most fascinating woman.) The painting is an adventurous woman floating on water in her cloak/boat discovering the source of the Orinoco River -- which happens to be a class of water. Tarot-like imagery. Ace of Cups?!
For all of you who are into subtle colors, here's link to Tseka's website w/her paintings:

Hey Casey - I looked up Remedios Varo & looked at a few of her paintings including the one you mentioned. WoW!! Amazing imagery there.
Yes, she is my favorite painter -- even more than Vermeer, Magritte and Kandinsky. She was very into Jungian archetypes and her paintings are like fantasy worlds. She really should be known better. I saw a retrospective of hers at the Women's Museum in D.C. five or six ago. The technique is amazing -- she paints like a tempera painter. Small overlapping brushstrokes over a grisaille (is that spelled right?). The imagery is direct from the unconscious.
After a brief exposure to the news this AM, I find I'm faaar more interested in an update on your kitchen remodel . . . you know, sane, grounded thoughts?! :-)
Neith,
If Juno's too busy to discuss her kitchen remodel, go to hgtv.com and click on the their message boards at the top.
That'll take you to their different forums where people are discussing (happily) what color to paint their kitchens, what window treatments are good, remodeling, gardening...all the happy hobbit-y things that fill up our lives and distract us from the approach of the Nine Ringwraiths. You'll see my name often in the color area. (You're probably thinking, dang, casey, is blogging and internetting all you do? But, but, but I get bored at work sometimes. And I do all this to distract me when I started to get SCARED.) Oh, and check out the website
www.ellenkennon.com
who has beautiful paints and you can play with her room painter interactive thingy for HOURS.
heh, heh - when I get to work, I'll see if I can hook you up with the Benjamin Moore site, speaking of colors. Plus another one that's pretty neat too!
Though I haven't done much w/it lately, I do have Chief Architect CAD program on my computer at work. They have some really very sophisticated tools for creating amazingly realistic dwellings w/landscaping & everything! Not cheap though....like $500+.
Oh man have i been missing out on one of my favorite subjects re-modelling. Well Juno it's often a make your own adventure story. I'll be waiting to hear all about it.
best of luck.
Rebuilding has been an ongoing lifestyle for me. Bought a hmmmmmm, shack? a rat infested shack? a dwelling at auction in such bad shape that it was not elegible for mortgage insurance about 7 years ago. It has great bones - a beautiful natural rock fireplace and beautiful beamed ceilings, lots and lots of huge windows in an amazing location. The kind of thing we dream of doing but rarely find, a little gumption swept me into a new adventure. Ceiling had sagged off in bedroom, pretty desparate roof situation, plumbing gone and wiring cut (a bit of help by the rats) everthing covered in fake wood panelling (hey Joe there is worse than flocked wall paper). The termites had eaten all the wood product and left only the photo - even they could not stomach the stuff. So down to the studs, off with layer, after layer, after layer of indoor outdoor carpeting -orange cleaner full strength seems to work the best. Booted up, goggled plus facemask repirator good down to radon daughters armed with garden hose and muriatic acid i cleaned the last of the gunk off the floors and began sifting sand to make cement; beautiful tiles between oak strips in lovely shades that look like lime stone. Did Neith mention something about being nutz ~~~~:> ja, i think she did. Been fun - mostly.
